Raul Lozano - Executive Director,

    Raul Lozano is the founder and executive director of Valley Verde.
    He first brought his passion for social justice and his love for gardening together in a program he created for Sacred Heart Community Services in 2009. La Mesa Verde would be the precursor to Valley Verde, which Raul founded as a separate nonprofit two years later.                                                                                                                                      
    A trained Master Gardener, Raul has more than 12 years of home and community gardening experience.                                                                                                           
    He is also is a veteran leader with more than 15 years of experience in the area’s
    nonprofit sector. He served community service and children’s services agencies
    before putting his love of the arts to work in 1999.
    For more than 10 years, Raul served as executive director of a San Jose-based
    Chicano theater company Teatro Visión. With a strong commitment to
    multiculturalism in the arts, he was one of the founders of the Multiethnic Arts
    Leadership Initiative, a leadership development program for people of color in arts,
    culture, and entertainment. He was also a member of the founding group of 1st ACT Silicon Valley, a civic and arts community initiative that spurred development of an arts district in San Jose.

    A graduate of Class 19, Raul is a senior fellow of American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley.

    As a young man growing up in California’s Central Valley and later as a student at
    San Jose State University, he took part in the Chicano Movement supporting Cesar
    Chavez and the farm workers.
    Raul’s commitment to improving the community and the lives of our most
    vulnerable neighbors continues to drive his work at Valley Verde.

        Sergio Martinez - Program Coordinator


        A dedicated student of Nature and Consciousness Fatherhood, Sergio's passion for Food Justice and Cultural Vibrancy has helped him create neighborhood projects involving providing local safe food access to Latin@/Mexican Indigenous circles in San Jose as of 2005.

        Along with his wife Angelica, two sons and community, they have planted La Defensa del Maiz San Jose. A group defending the millennium Maiz seeds heritage against the Bio-Corporate Engineers patenting a new breed of genetically trans-mutated Maiz. Also Servicing the community with Organic Maiz Masa/Harina.

        Sergio loves living in the garden and especially his family Milpa. A multi-disciplinary student of sustainable gardening, Indigenous Permaculture, Bio-Intensive, Dry Farming and personal observation and conclusions. Sergio believes that sharing plant knowledge to first time learners is "Simplicity, Simplicity and more Simplicity" 

        Sergio also shares his love for cooking. His specialty is using Ancient Foods from Mexico and South America. Amaranth, Quinoa, Chia, Cacao, Mesquite are considered Super Foods he has learned to include in many dishes as alternatives.

        Sergio believes safe food access to all, is a right not a choice.

        Rory Fukuda – Designer/Craftsman,


        • Rory is an engineering CAD designer with talents extending to woodworking, animation, and video editing. A native of San Jose, he has witnessed the Santa Clara valley's transformation from agriculture to high tech. As a team member of Valley Verde, he combines a knowledge of San Jose's rich cultural history, a background in engineering design and woodworking to create unique and custom projects for Valley Verde.
